One way of caring for puppies is by giving them regular baths. Puppies that are three (3) to four (4) months old are ready for their first bath time. Here are some tips that you can follow to make sure that your puppy’s bath goes smoothly and is fun for both of you:
Pick A Bathing Area
Three to four-month old puppies are small enough to fit in a sink or a small basin. You can wash them in these places. Prepare the area by removing things and other items that you don’t want to get wet in the process. Make sure that you clean the sink or the basin before and after bathing the puppy.
Collect Your Supplies
Before you start the whole bathing process, you must gather all the items required and make sure that you put them within your reach. You don’t want to leave the puppy in the middle of his bathing time. This will give him enough time to jump, if he’s in a sink or run around, if he’s in a basin and on the floor. You are putting your pet in danger. The important items that you need to have are shampoo, soap, towel and water.
Secure Your Puppy
This is a very important point to keep in mind as a part of caring for puppies while giving him or her bath. Hold him still while you grab or pull-out his or her shampoo. During the first bath, puppies running away or jumping may not be that big of a worry because he doesn’t know what is coming. However, during the second or third bath, giving him a bath might be quite more challenging.
Soak Them
Before you apply your puppy’s shampoo make sure that you have their fur wet first. When you pour the water, always begin from the head down to its tail and protect their ears from getting wet.
Lather Em’
You must shampoo them thoroughly from the head down to its tail. At the same time, don’t forget to lather their little paws and underbelly.
Rinse Them Well
When you’re rinsing your puppy, make sure that you still start from the head down to its tail. Pour water or keep it running until you no longer see any shampoo coming out from its fur. Another indication that you’ve rinsed him or her thoroughly is when you can run your hand over your pup’s coat with ease. Rinsing thoroughly is very important since shampoo can dry up and cause irritation and itchiness to their skin.
Dry Em’ Up
Prepare a towel that is especially for your puppy. Make sure that it is clean. After bathing, wrap them with it and gently rub their fur which will soak up any excess water.
Reward Your Puppy
Giving your puppy a reward is a vital part of caring for puppies. During the first few months of life, it is a good method to use in training and caring for them. They will associate acceptable behaviors and activities to treats and praises. Therefore, the more generous you are, the easier it is to train them. After the bath, give him or her doggie treats and allow him to roam around.
