Crate training a puppy can only be successful if you follow certain strategies that are favorable to the puppy. Don’t expect your little pup to like it the first time he sees a crate. Don’t expect him not to cry if you suddenly put him inside it without warning. It involves certain strategies that will allow your puppy to slowly like it until he becomes comfortable and starts to identify the crate as his own little den.
Puppy Supplies
One of the first things that you should prepare before you begin crate training a puppy are the puppy supplies that he needs beside the crate. These supplies are very important in the success of your crate training. It will make your pet happier and comfortable and we need to avoid unhappy puppies inside the crate.
- Water and Food Bowls – if your puppy has to be confined for more than two hours, then he definitely needs to have access to these bowls. Leave him water and food just enough for the time that he is inside the crate. Never overfeed him.
- Toys and Treats – Leave him something that he can play with. These toys are very helpful because puppies get bored too and when they are they want to play. These toys will also serve as his chew toys. Chew toys make puppies very happy especially when they go through their teething stage. Having them on hand will also save your shoes! Never give him toys that are smaller than his mouth to avoid choking and causing internal obstruction. Put his favorite toys at the far end opposite the door opening to encourage your puppy to go into the crate.
- Comfortable Beddings – Beddings will make the stay of your puppy inside the crate comfortable. Most puppies love sleeping and lying on soft beddings. However, this is not an absolute rule. There are also puppies that prefer sleeping on hard and flat surfaces. So if you put soft beddings inside their crates, the tendency is, they will push it to one end of the crate. If this happens, don’t force the puppy and simply remove the beddings from the crate. If he starts to chew the beddings, make sure that you remove it because he might swallow the pieces.
Crate training a puppy successfully is all about how you introduce your puppy to his new crate. In our next post we will give some suggestions as to how to make crate training more fun for both you and your little puppy.
