House training puppies is the first of many challenges that a new puppy owner goes through. You must understand and accept the fact that owning a puppy is a major task and puppy potty training is an important step in its training. They maybe adorable, cute, and cuddly but you have to play the role of a teacher too.
As a new puppy owner, your primary task is to teach your puppy the concept that your house is not his restroom. Trust me when I say that you need a lot of patience and perseverance in house training puppies. In this article, I will give you the Do’s and Dont’s of house training puppies.
HOUSE TRAINING DO’s
- Always think of your puppy as an equivalent of a human baby and that it too needs to eliminate frequently.
- You have to take your puppy out every couple hours during its normal waking hours. Also immediately after waking, playing, eating, and everytime your puppy starts “rooting” around or appears to be anxious. You puppy also needs to be let out before he goes to bed at night.
- You must take your puppy to the same place each time it needs to do its business.
- Immediately after it does its business in the appropriate place, praise and reward him with a treat.
- You must allow your puppy to go several times before bringing him back into the house. Puppies are not capable of releasing all the contents of its bladder and bowels at one go. If you bring it back before it gets rid of everything, I’m pretty sure you will find a little surprise after.
- Make a loud racket to startle your puppy if you see him in about to eliminate in an improper area. Quickly scoop and take him to the place where you want him to finish his business.
- Meticulously clean areas he did his business with a disinfectant and/or odor neutralizer.
- Feeding time for your puppy must be consistent everyday. This will standardize bowel movements so you can predict when he needs to go.
HOUSE TRAINING DONT’s
- Punish your puppy when it has an accident. You must take into consideration that puppies do not have the capacity to comprehend that they did something wrong. This might make him think that urinating or defecating is bad.
- Take your puppy over to the place where it did its business and show it to him. To a puppy, this is meaningless and will only confuse it more. In addition, their train of thought is very limited, and chances are, he will not understand the message you want to convey.
- Put your puppy outside by itself to do its business. Immediately after he does his business, praise him. If you don’t do this, he will not learn that what he is doing is a good thing. Always remember, their train of thought is very limited.
By following these tips on house training puppies you are sure to quickly pass this phase to have a wonderful family companion that has good habits ingrained in him.
