Tips On Housebreaking A Puppy

 Housebreaking a puppy is a process whereby the owner teaches his puppy to learn skills, such as defecating and urinating outdoors instead of indoors. The process is generally time-consuming and needs a lot of patience, more patience and consistency. If you have all these key ingredients and the right formula, housebreaking is fairly easy to accomplish.

How To Start Housebreaking A Puppy

Safe place – When you begin puppy house training you should always provide a safe place for your puppy to stay to prevent accidents or damage to flooring. Puppies love to play around and they are prone to accidents. The place should allow you the chance to supervise and oversee what he is doing.  You can use a crate if you want because it’s very safe or you can use a particular room. Make sure that the crate and the room is large enough to allow him to stand, turn around and curl up when he wants to sleep. 

Right Place – If you see him beginning to pee or poop in his “safe place”, always take him outside as soon as possible. Make sure that you choose a certain area where you prefer him to get used to peeing or defecating. Always take him to this exact spot everytime when he is about to deal with his “business”.

Rewards – Housebreaking a puppy involves giving treats and praises.  They love these and once they’ve associated good behavior with rewards they will continue on doing it. Be consistent and be generous at the start of this process.

Commands – Associate peeing and urinating with specific commands, such as “go pee, spot” or “potty now”. Remember to also be consistent with these commands. It means that everytime he pees and poops make sure you utter these same words. Once he is familiar with the command, he will know what to do everytime you say it, even if you don’t accompany him to his spot and he’ll get a treat after.

Frequency  -When you’re housebreaking a puppy make sure that you take your puppy outside as often as you can. It gives you a chance to reward him for proper behavior and the more often he receives rewards the faster he will become housebroken.

Cues that you need to take him outside:

• During the first few hours, bring him outside at least once per hour
• When he starts to pee or poop inside the house
• When he starts sniffling around
• When he starts circling around
• After a meal
• After a nap

Remember that consistency plays a great role in this whole process of housebreaking a puppy. You must have a regular schedule that you should follow until he has gotten used to it. In addition, feed him on a regular schedule as well. This way he will learn to establish a potty habit in relation to his meal time.
