Getting a puppy is like having a new member of the family. The joy that springs from having a pet is almost like having a baby of your own that needs your utmost care and attention. For most people learning how to potty train a puppy they can find it to be most challenging. It is very displeasing to come home to a dirty house with carpets soiled by your puppy. No matter how cute they are, you can’t help but be annoyed.
Housebreaking a puppy is the most important training that all puppies need. If you know how and where to begin it can be pretty simple. With the right knowledge, training, attitude and skill I’m pretty sure you will be happy seeing a disciplined puppy soon. Here are some tips on how to potty train a puppy effectively and quickly.
PATIENCE
You must realize that having a puppy is like having a new little baby. Like all babies they start from scratch and they need your guidance so they can develop basic skills. You must understand that puppies need time before they can master simple potty procedures. Like all babies, puppies have no control over their bladder or bowel. That is the reason why they poop and urinate everywhere. When you start your training keep in mind that it will take some time before they will be able to understand your instructions.
EACH PUPPY IS UNIQUE
Like human beings, puppies are unique too. Their intelligence varies, depending on their breeds and the individual puppies per se. There are some breeds that are famous because they are easily potty trained. Other breeds, on the other hand, are much more difficult to train.
INDOOR vs. OUTDOOR POTTY HABITS
Indoor potty training is good, but the question is, do you want your puppy to poop inside your house? I don’t think so. Therefore, don’t “paper train” your pup. If he or she gets used to this treatment, you will have to train him again for outdoor potty habits. And you don’t want to start from the beginning again.
CRATE TRAINING
Make sure that your puppy is confined inside a crate when you’re not around to watch or oversee him, especially when you’re sleeping. This way you won’t have to clean up the mess that your cute little puppy makes everytime you are not looking.
CONSISTENCY
Learning how to potty train a puppy involves consistency which is very important when you want to effectively train your pup. Schedule a regular sleeping habit. Your puppy should go and get up from bed at the same time everyday. At the same time, schedule the time when you should bring him out to poop. And another important thing is always take him to the same spot where you want him to do his “task”. This is one way of training your puppy’s internal clock to do their business at a certain time of the day and a certain place.
CLAPPING
Associate “NO” with clapping. Everytime you see your puppy doing his “business” inside the house, say NO and clap your hands. Then lift him and bring him outside of the house to finish the task. This way, whenever he hears you clapping in the future, he knows what not to do.
DON’T USE PUNISHMENT
Avoid punishment during the initial phase of the potty training. Guide him what to do but don’t punish or shout at your puppy. You don’t want to traumatize your little bundle of fur.
REWARD
Praise or reward your puppy whenever he does the things the way you want him to do it or whenever he goes to the bathroom outside. Give him a pat on the head or something to chew on. He will associate good behavior with reward and thus continue doing it in the future.
If you use these tips on how to potty train a puppy you are sure to be off to a good start. Even though it may seem challenging at first, you don’t want to give up on this essential task as an older dog is much harder to train so if you can start when you puppy is young it will be easier.
