Potty training a puppy is one of the first things that you must do if you own a puppy. Having a cute and fluffy pet to go home to is nice but puppies can be very messy inside the house. In fact, mess is the last name of all puppies. Cute and messy, what an irony! But we would love for them to stay because they make going home a lot more fun. Puppy house training is the only sure way to a well-behaved pet and a cleaner house. So do it!
ESTABLISH A ROUTINE
Puppies or dogs are creatures of habit and routine. This is the most important tip that you must know when you are potty training a puppy. Routines are established by having a regular and consistent schedule of activities. Once it has been set in your puppy’s internal clock, both you and your puppy will know when it’s time to do things.
Feed your puppy on a regular schedule. Meals should be given at a particular time each day. During the first few months feed him three times a day and once he is 6 months old, give him food twice a day. After each meal, expect that your puppy will poop or pee so bring him outside to do these things.
Don’t give your puppy water to drink at least two hours before bedtime. This way, you won’t wake up to a pungent-smelling house. Expect him to eliminate after he wakes up from a nap, playing with you and after each meal.
Also make sure that you bring him to the same spot each time he goes out to eliminate. This method will teach your puppy the acceptable spot where he can eliminate in the future. At the same time, this will also give him a cue as to what he’s supposed to do everytime you bring him to this same spot.
Use the same command or words everytime he defecates or urinates until he has learned to associate these words with elimination. This is a very effective method in training your dog to relieve himself on command.
TREATS AND PRAISES
These are very effective tools in potty training a puppy. Always praise your puppy everytime he does something that is acceptable to you. It encourages your puppy to act accordingly. Giving treats (food) as a reward is fine. However, make sure that you don’t give him too much because it may upset his digestion. A constant stomach upset is the fastest way of undoing all of your training. You don’t want this to happen. So only give in moderation or when you’re trying to train or teach your dog other tricks aside from potty training.
