5 Tips To Encourage Proper Puppy Behavior

Playing is a vital part of your pet’s socialization process. Learning how to effectively handle play with your puppy will determine what kind of adult dog he will become.  One of the most obvious puppy behaviors, when left alone or when someone’s around, is to play. It’s because they have a natural urge for this. Playtime, believe it or not, is the highlight of a puppy’s day. Puppy play usually includes chasing, biting, pouncing and barking. They may look cute but be careful because some of these are signs that he may become an aggressive dog.  Therefore, learning how to effectively and properly play with your puppy is a good way of preventing aggressive puppy behavior.

 Here are some tips that you can follow to improve puppy behavior:

Provide Exercise – Your puppy is a bundle of energy and he would explore his environment nonstop until he gets tired. Channel this energy by productive activities such as walking, running or by playing fetch.  Do this for a certain amount of time everyday. When he gets tired he usually spends the rest of the day sleeping.

Mental Stimulation – Make his play time more enjoyable by giving him opportunities to solve things out by himself. You can make use of his chew toys, rubber toys or a Kong.  A Kong is a rubber toy that you can fill up with treats such as peanut butter. They will chase, bite and nibble on the toy until he obtains his (food) reward. It’s a good way to teach your puppy how to self-entertain and forget messing around inside the house.

Play Ideas – Playing fetch or throwing a soccer ball is a good way to get him active which will tire him out.  As you play together, also involve teaching him how to return the ball back to you. It’s a good chance for you to teach him basic obedience commands.

Leadership Exercises – To control puppy behavior you must show him who is in command. How can you do that?  By teaching him that everything in life has a price.  Don’t give him treats or rewards unless he has performed what you want him to do, such as “sit”.  The next thing is by never allowing him to become too much of an attention-grabber, to bite you, or bark. Whenever he does this you should teach him a lesson that it’s not okay to do that. Get out of the room and leave him for a few minutes until he has settled down. Then go back and give him the attention and some treats.

Don’t Sit On The Floor With Your Puppy - Although this sounds like a fun idea, you must avoid doing it because it increases your puppy’s excitement and it can be harder to control your puppy.
