A puppy crate for your little pup is nothing more than the modern equivalent of a den. Before humans domesticated dogs, the den was the place where they got the feeling of seclusion and privacy. Although the modern dog has somewhat reached a level of complete domestication, some of their wild traits still remains. And the desire to have your own little lair is one of those traits.
Having a puppy crate has many advantages. The most important is the fact that it is a very important training tool for puppy potty training. Individuals who do not use this training tool find it harder to train their puppies and have high puppy related accidents in the house. These crates are also a god sent when it comes to transporting your pets. When a dog finds itself in an environment that is not familiar to them, a crate can help them feel comfortable and safe. Aside from improving your chances of getting into a hotel that is not that strict when it comes to pets, most landlords only allow crate trained dogs on their premises.
Ideal puppy crates should be portable and light, and made of meshed wire or plastic. When your puppy reaches the point where he or she is house trained, you can just leave the crate door open. The puppy can then use this as his indoor dog house.
How to Crate Train Your Puppy
You have to be a bit patient when it comes to crate training your puppy. First, the pup will reject being locked inside the puppy crate. Expect your puppy to have lots of yelping and tantrums for it will not readily accept the concept of being locked in. Resist the temptation of removing your puppy out of the crate for it will just set the training back. Just give a stern “no” everytime until your dog gets used to the idea of being inside a confined space.
A good method of getting your puppy to quickly adjust to this training is through the use of toys. Give your puppy chew toys to keep him occupied. Remember to keep changing your puppy’s chew toy for dogs get bored easily with the same toy.
How Long Do You Keep Your Dog In A Puppy Crate?
Keep your puppy inside the puppy crate for at least two hours at a time. Whenever your puppy is inside the crate, make sure that you are around so that the puppy will feel secure. If you are up for it, you can also move the crate inside your room to speed up this process. Your puppy needs to understand that his being confined inside the crate is not permanent nor a punishment.
