Puppy leash training is one of the important things we need to teach our four legged friend. Our mission as owners is to educate our puppy on what is, and what is not tolerable behavior on a leash. Almost all puppies can be trained within a couple weeks. If it takes longer to train your little fluff ball, do not worry, it will be worth it in the long run.
Puppy leash training begins with introducing and making your puppy familiar with a collar. A leather collar is what I use on all my dogs, which include the puppies that I am training. Place the collar on your puppy when you are playing with him. Your puppy will find the collar a distraction at first and will try to scratch at it in an attempt to remove it. No matter how much your puppy whines and begs you to remove the collar, do not take it off. If you have no intention of leaving the collar on, take if off before you forget about it.
Now that your puppy is comfortable with the idea of using a collar, you introduce the leash. The same thing applies here; you must get your puppy comfortable with the idea of using a leash. You must make your puppy understand that a leash is nothing to be frightened about. As for small breeds, a light weight leash is preferred. What you do is fasten the leash to the collar and let them run around with it. This is the part where you let your puppy become familiar with the idea. In time, your puppy will soon forget about it as they become distracted with other things.
When you feel that your puppy is comfortable with the idea of a leash, then it is time for you to pick up the other end. Start first with walking around the house. Your fluff ball will most likely tag along with you without any problem. If your puppy walks with you on a loose leash, praise him, and give him some treats. But if your puppy walks away from your side, stop. Never tug the leash for your pup to come back near you. Just calmly call your puppy back and praise him when he does.
Stop walking whenever your puppy starts pulling on the leash. If you continue walking, this will only add to bad leash behavior. Puppies need to understand that pulling on a leash will get them nowhere. Apply the same approach everytime your puppy sits down in the middle of walking. Again, never pull on the leash. Just calmly call your puppy back and praise him when he does come.
As in all puppy obedience training, consistency and patience is essential to instill good habits in your puppy especially when it comes to puppy leash training. Using these tips you are sure to shorten the learning curve for your little puppy.
