One reason why puppy obedience training is done is to establish a strong relationship between the puppy and the owner. It allows you to establish a common language that both of you can relate to and understand. With understanding, your puppy can act accordingly or respond with acceptable behavior that will make their masters very happy. Puppies and dogs love to please their masters so they want to do the things that make their masters happy.

Puppy obedience training does not only teach them basic commands but as well will help them communicate their basic needs. These basic needs include exercise, feeling of accomplishment and acceptable social interaction. Here are some of the basic obedience training commands:

  • Sit (Don’t Jump on people)
  • Stay (Don’t run off)
  • Down (Put things down)
  • Come (Follow me)
  • Responding to “No”
  • Responding to “Release”
  • Heel  (Walk)

Achieving these basic commands need a lot of time, effort and patience. It also involves consistency and establishing a strong bond with the puppy. There are two popular training styles that you can follow:

The Leash and Collar Training

This is an old but still a very popular puppy obedience training method. It is very effective because you’re able to learn how to control your puppy or dog with a leash, how to keep the leash loose and how to make a leash correction. You may use the leash and collar with varying degrees of force, depending on the puppy or dog’s attitude, to correct certain unacceptable behaviors.  When you’re not happy about something you can simply say “NO”, prompt the leash and guide him in doing what you want him to learn.  Generally the leash becomes a method of control that owner’s use to correct a dog for not obeying a command or whenever he makes a mistake. Keep in mind that the leash is also a method to establish the handler’s leadership over the pup or the dog. Don’t use it to punish or hurt them because if you do so, you lose your pet’s trust in you.  If you treat them fairly you establish a bond of trust which makes training much easier.

Reward Training

Rewarding your puppy or dog is an effective method to lure, strengthen his or her behavior and elicit the dog’s best response. The difference between reward training and leash and collar training is, the latter involves physical manipulation while reward training does not. Reward serves as a lure that makes the dog perform acceptable behaviors of his own volition.

The owner tells the dog to do something such as “sit” and waits for the dog to do it. Once the dog has successfully performed the behavior, he is rewarded with treats.  Rewards become a method used to reinforce good behavior. Together with treats the owner can also praise the puppy or dog by saying “good boy” “good dog” and the likes.

It is also of vital importance that you get the full attention of your pet in order for you to control him. You may train them inside your house, in the park, on your backyard or on the street. You can basically teach your puppy obedience training everywhere you go – this allows consistency and reinforces basic commands in all situations.
