Putting your puppy on a leash is a good way to train him or her to display good puppy behavior whenever you prompt him to do so. You instill in him good and acceptable manners that the both of you will enjoy for a long time. Also, training him will make the bond between you grow stronger since you are learning more about his personality in certain situations and at the same time you are both learning ways on how to communicate effectively with each other.
It is advisable that you start training your puppy on a leash as early as possible. Start while he or she is young so you don’t have to retrain him again when he gets older which, by the way, is a harder task to accomplish. Here are few steps on how you could start and go through the process:
Step 1: The Collar
Allow your puppy to become more familiar and comfortable with wearing a collar around his neck. This is the first thing that you should do on the very first day he arrives to your house. Keep in mind that collars must not be heavy. It should be a light-weight collar. You may put it around his neck while he is eating or playing. These activities provide a distraction from the collar. If you see him rolling around or scratching to get the collar off, rest assured that this is normal behavior. You do need to be firm, don’t take it off. Wait for the time that he has settled down and has totally forgotten about the existence of the collar on his neck. This is the time that you take it off.
Step 2: The Leash
Remember that you only put your puppy on a leash once he has grown comfortable and happy with his collar. Never introduce two things at the same time because it may lead to anxiety. Introduce the leash and give him time to adjust and be comfortable with it. He must realize the leash is not something that he should be afraid of. Choose a light-weight leash that he can check out and drag around the house. But never let him do it without your supervision to avoid accidents that could harm your pet and your home.
Step 3: Pick up the other end of the leash
Walk him around using his or her leash. Don’t worry about tiring your puppy because he loves to follow your around wherever you go. They’re just adorable like that. They either see you as their playmates, littermates, mom or someone they are comfortable with and trust. So you must learn how to use it to your advantage.
The first few lessons should be fun and brief. Walk him around the house at first. Keep in mind that if he walks along with a loose leash, reward him with treats, praise or petting. This will make him a happy puppy and will continually follow you everytime you pick up the leash and walk him around. However, if he strains on the leash don’t pull or yank him over to you. Never ever do this. You can deal with this situation by calling him over and rewarding him when he follows your order. Do the same when your puppy suddenly sits down while you are walking.
Remember that with all the steps mentioned above persistence, consistency and patience are required. Your puppy is like a baby that needs your thorough guidance as he slowly learns acceptable behaviors. Follow the steps mentioned and you’re sure to succeed in this endeavor.
