Potty training a puppy can be one of the most exasperating things that owners have to deal with. As the owner, just hope that once you have placed all your efforts to potty train your pup, you won’t have to go through it again. There are many puppy potty training tips one can use to go about potty training.
The use of these puppy potty training tips will help your puppy not to do his business inside the house. It will even also create a firm connection of faith and attachment between you and your furry friend.
Below are a few puppy potty training tips to aid you how to effectively potty train your puppy.
Crate
Start crate training puppies the instant they step into your house. Pick a crate that is suitable for the size of your puppy. Talk with your veterinarian, pet store, or breeder, when picking a crate for your little friend. This does not mean though that you leave your pup inside the crate for hours on end. Your puppy’s crate must be a comfortable place for your four legged friend, where he can willingly retreat to. Whenever you go to bed at night, leave the puppy inside the crate. Usually, a puppy will not do his business while he is inside his crate. You may want to get up a few times in the middle of the night for a few weeks to take your puppy outside, as he may not be able to at times, to hold his bodily functions for the entire night. Once you wake up in the morning, bring your puppy outside to do his business. Making him walk to the door by himself can lead to you being grumpy early in the morning.
Training Pads
Put puppy training pads or newspapers on the floor around the area where you want to keep your puppy. If workable, limit the movement of your puppy in an un-carpeted area so that it will be easier for you to clean if he makes a mess. Puppy training pads are easier to use than newspaper because the urine will not seep through the pad. If you choose to use newspapers, it is a cheaper alternative. But prepare yourself for some frequent floor mopping. If you prefer to use puppy training pads, start using them right away. If you use them from the start, by the time your puppy becomes more mature, he might think the pads are a new toy and just it as a chew toy. The instant your puppy starts to relieve himself, scoop him up and put him on the newspaper or pad. Never yell at or scold your puppy if he does not go in the right area. What you should do is just encourage him everytime he goes on the pad or paper. In time, the pad or paper can be placed near the door.
Reward
Take your puppy outdoors for regular potty breaks and carry a small treat with you. Once your puppy relieves himself outside, praise him and give him a reward. In time your puppy will learn that he must go outside to do his business.
Hopefully these puppy potty training tips will help you with your own puppy potty training. It does pay to start the process much earlier as it is always much easier to train a puppy rather than a full grown dog.
