You’ve found the perfect puppy to add to your family and you can’t wait to bring him home. Before you pick him up you should make sure that you have the following essential puppy supplies waiting to welcome your little bundle of fur home:

Bowls

One of the most important puppy supplies that your pet should have is a food/water bowl. Make sure that they have their own instead of just putting their food anywhere. Choose a stable bowl so that it won’t tip over when he is eating or drinking from it. During the first few months, use small bowls and as he grows older and bigger you can get him larger ones. The size of the bowls should be according to your puppy’s size and age so they won’t overeat nor fall into the bowl when he or she drinks out of it. It is also encouraged that you buy one bowl for food and another bowl for water.

Comfortable Bed or Crate

Crates serves as a den whenever you’re not around to supervise your puppy.  It’s a big cage which can be made of metal, plastic or wood. They come in many sizes and styles. Just make sure that you buy a crate big enough for your pup so he can stand, turn around and lie down easily. Crates are advisable because it promotes good sleeping habits for your puppy. It also aids in house training him and in promoting safety for your puppy and for your home as well.

You can also prepare a comfortable sleeping area where he can lie down and sleep when you’re around the house.  Just make sure that he is using a puppy-sized bed so that he is safe and snug.

Toys

Toys are one of the most vital puppy supplies that you absolutely need to have. This will save your furniture, shoes, carpets and other important possessions from being damaged. Puppies love to explore their environment and they do this by chewing whatever they see.  And the chewing habit is more severe during his teething days.  If you notice that he likes chewing on soft things, buy him a cottony toy. If you see him chewing on hard objects, buy him toys that are hard (plastic toys). Choose the toys that are designed especially for puppies and make sure that it isn’t too small or too big for his mouth to bite.

Puppy Collar

There are many puppy collars available on the market. They come in different colors and designs. But when choosing the perfect collar for your puppy, make sure that you choose collars with the right weight.  Your puppy is a baby and it therefore needs a lightweight collar. Never give him collars used for older dogs because it would be too heavy for him and hence, will cause too much discomfort.  Collars could either be nylon or leather; it doesn’t matter, as long as it’s not too big. To check if it fits him well, you must first measure the size of his neck and add two (2) inches to it. Buy a collar with that measurement. After you have attached it to your puppy’s neck, check it again if it fits well. You should be able to slide your two fingers in between your puppy’s neck and his collar. You have chosen the collar with the right size if, upon insertion of your finger, it’s a snug fit.  Otherwise, adjust the collar again or buy a new one. Your puppy will try to take it off in the first few days that the collar is on his neck, but don’t take it off. Give him time to adjust to it because he will, soon.

It is also important that you attach an I.D. card or tag on your puppy’s collar.  Make sure that it contains all the information such as, puppy’s name and your name, as well as your address and telephone number.

There are other puppy supplies out there that you may consider buying for your puppy. However, the supplies mentioned above are very important and are must-haves for all puppy owners out there.
