The Perfect Puppy : How to Raise a Well-Behaved Dog Reviews

Thank you Gwen Bailey! I am a dog trainer and a volunteer at the local shelter and I am forever being asked for ONE book on puppy training – and now I’ve found it. This book has a wealth of information including stages of maturity and what to expect, prevention of the most common problems, and best of all a Positive based training method. These are the methods I have been using in teaching my students and they are a real joy – and they work. A must-have book for puppy owners and trainers.
We bought this book when we adopted a puppy. The ideas were very well-thought out and well-written, easy to understand. I read this book over and over and wondered why my puppy was still behaving like a maniac, very few of the techniques worked. I began to question myself, thinking I could not understand the simple techniques written about in this book. We hired a trainer. When he came to the house he saw “The Perfect Puppy” sitting on our coffee table, and mentioned that he thought it was a great book……. just not for us!!! He explained that the book was written about more submissive breeds (ie Golden Retreiver), we adopted a puppy made up of 2 very dominant breeds. At least I figured out that I wasn’t crazy after all!I’ll keep the book around and definitely pass it on to anyone I know who will be getting a puppy. I’m very disappointed that it didn’t work, because as I said, it was well-written and easy to understand. I hope it benefits someone else.Buy The Perfect Puppy : How to Raise a Well-Behaved Dog now for only $ 3.50!
Puppy Training: Owner’s Week-By-Week Training Guide (Training Book Series)
Kennel Club Books introduces a breakthrough in puppy-training books! Well-known author Charlotte Schwartz has taken a key commonsense principal of canine development and applied it to the education of every new puppy. All dog trainers and behaviorists agree that the first eight weeks of a dog’s life are the most critical time for training and shaping the dog’s behavior and obedience potential. Puppy Training presents a unique and useful approach for new owners, carefully detailing an eight-week home-training program. With over 40 years of experience in dog training, Charlotte Schwartz reveals to the owner the secrets to successful house-training and obedience training. Using positive-training techniques, the author describes her methods of house-training, puppy motivation (treat training), personality tests, basic obedience commands as well as some fun tricks for the puppy. Puppy Training is designed to give owners’ an easy-to-follow sequence, week by week, presenting all of the behaviors that new owners want to teach their puppies—just as if the owners and puppies were in an obedience class. Readable, entertaining and based on the author’s tried and true methods, this book is illustrated with over 135 color photographs, many of which capture puppies successfully trained by Miss Schwartz. Whether this is your first puppy or one-hundredth, Puppy Training will prove to be an invaluable resource in the education of your new canine companion.

Charlotte Schwartz still believes that if you let a dog go out the door before you, eat before you or allowed up on the furniture, muchless sleep with you that it will take over ruling the household.Dogs totally understand who controls the food – the ones with the opposable thumbs. If you ask for a few simple things like a sit before being fed who cares who ate before whom? You give up many of the pleasures there are in enjoying the companionship of your puppy/dog if you follow Charlotte’s advice to not allow them up on the furniture or up on your bed.

My Smart Puppy: Fun, Effective, and Easy Puppy Training (Book & 60min DVD) Reviews

As with all of Brian and Sarah’s books, My Smart Puppy is a delight to read. Easy to follow, personable, and full of helpful suggestions, this book is both motivating and encouraging. While reading it, I kept wanting to stop and do the various exercises with my dogs. Packed with information, this is an easy-to-apply, practical, and FUN book on dog training. The stories about Pip, the authors’ puppy, are engaging, and the many photos illustrate the principles and training games beautifully. The space games are a new and much needed addition to the world of dog training, as they teach owners of both puppies and adult dogs how to communicate easily, effectively, and clearly with their dogs in an enjoyable and non-confrontational manner. Through them, a strong, positive relationship is established as the foundation of all training, so that your dog learns built in habits of trust, respect, and obedience. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a puppy or dog of any age. It will help you and your dog understand each other better and have a lifetime of fun together.
Hi! I got the My Smart Puppy book on Friday and read the whole thing by Saturday! Hudson and I have already played all the Level I games. He is perfect at some already (since we’ve already been training), but we will continue to improve at others. What I want to say is that it is, hands down, the most wonderful book on training I have read since I decided to get a dog pal. I read Good Owners, Great Dogs and Metrodog too, and I loved them both, but there is something about the tone of MSP that beats all.
The whole thought of looking at training as a series of “games” is awesome. And, you know what? The best thing was the included DVD. I had read about half the book, and then watched the DVD. I realized that while I consider myself an effusive person (especially with Hudson), I really could stand to be a lot more joyful and playful with Hudson during training. I was being very businesslike about it. I really needed to see Sarah and Brian’s attitude with the dogs to understand what they mean about showing enthusiasm. My relationship with Hudson improved THAT DAY! I have been trying to mimic the tone in the DVD, and we are both enjoying our time together so much more. Hudson is suddenly so much more responsive, and now I realize that treats aren’t even necessary anymore for the behaviors he already knows.
Hudson and I are having a GREAT time. I’m amazed at how responsive he is when I step into his space or block him with my body. I couldn’t believe it would work, but it does. We are already close to having him sit every time I stand in front of him!
Oh, and the words “Smart Puppy” really help too. When you say “What a Smart Puppy!!!” to your dog, you can’t help sounding happy and believing it!

PuppyPerfect: The user-friendly guide to puppy parenting (Howell Dog Book of Distinction) Reviews

As a total novice in the dog owning/training department I read every dog book I could get my hands on before our puppy came home. A lot of those books were good, but focused on house/obedience training an older puppy (4+ months). We were getting our puppy at 7 weeks and I just wasn’t sure what I should be doing at this early stage. This book walks you through all of your puppy’s ages starting at 8 weeks and gives you weekly projects to start working on, which I found most helpful. I now know what I can reasonably expect of such a young pup and feel that while my puppy won’t learn it all right away at least I’m not sending us down the wrong path from the very beginning. I felt comfortable with the author’s teaching style (calm, fun, easy-going, but authoritive) and relieved to know that it’s ok to get down on the floor and roll around with your new puppy without losing your puppy’s respect as her leader (as some books implied would happen). I would definitely recommend this book to anyone getting a new puppy.
I am not a professional dog trainer but found this book this book to be extremely helpful in dealing with specific behavioral issues I was having with my 15 week golden-doodle. The book as a whole is very good and the index leading to specific problems (such as “mounting”) were invaluable. There are alot of books out there, but this one is head and shoulders above the rest.Buy PuppyPerfect: The user-friendly guide to puppy parenting (Howell Dog Book of Distinction) now for only $ 4.99!

How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With Reviews

This book was an okay book. It covers all major areas of puppy development, looks at training and problems in an elementary way, and uses nice black and white pictures for illustration. I find that it does rely rather heavily on food as reward. I liked this book better than the Monks of Skete’s Art of Raising a puppy because it’s more practical, yet I think that you are even better of if you purchase Kilcommens Good owners, great dogs. Though a bit more expensive, you get what you pay for. To me, dog training books need to have the potential to be used daily as a guide. I consulted this book maybe 3 times, while I use the Kilcommens book almost every other day.
I am a novice dog owner and I have to say this book has helped me tremendously with the most important period of the dog’s life- puppyhood. This is my favorite “puppy guide” in my large library of puppy and dog training books I have bought over the last year. All I can say is wow! If you have been searching for a good book so that you can raise a new family member and best friend look no further because this is the book for you. It is extremely imformative and easy to understand, a must for anyone bring a puppy into their home.Buy How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With now for only $ 10.76!
Good Dog 101: Easy Lessons to Train Your Dog the Happy, Healthy Way
Abandoning traditional training methods, which tend to use punishment and physical dominance, progressive dog-trainer Cristine Dahl incorporates studies of animal behavior and humane treatment into an approach called Learning Theory. Though Learning Theory is the top method suggested by the SPCA, a practical guide has not yet been published for dog-owners. Here it is — penned by a recognized dog-training authority and filled with in-depth, step-by-step instructions, and organized by behavior problems.

Good Dog 101: Easy Lessons to Train Your Dog the Happy, Healthy Way Reviews

As an animal lover and veterinarian, I am delighted with Good Dog 101. This book engagingly explains the essentials of behavior science. Using these sound principles, Good Dog 101 shows us how to improve our dogs’ behavior. Unlike training manuals for dogs in performance sports, Good Dog 101 aims to help you make your dog a joy to live with at home.Good Dog 101 politely debunks training methods based on personality and intuition. There may certainly be dog or horse “whisperers,” but most of us are not! We need to learn techniques that regular folks can use to educate a happy dog. Good Dog 101 also analyzes the “boot camp” approach. Methods that use harsh force and intimidation are dangerous and ineffective. Good Dog 101 provides a practical alternative. The training tips are clear, concise, and conveniently arranged.
I recommend this book for the new dog owner, the “challenging dog” owner, and anyone who is curious about the fascinating world of animal behavior. If we were to use these methods with children, co-workers, and spouses, the world would be a happier place!

Almost two books in one: the first an interestingly written and extremely well researched history or how and why traditional dog training is the way it is, and why it doesn’t get desired results in many cases; and second, a well organized “how-to” for all the real life issues we face with our dogs. I’ve always had an uneasy feeling about traditional dog training and its apparent base in “dog mind reading” or other ill founded theories. A lot of the traditional methods seem illogical, ineffective, or even cruel. This book brings a much needed scientific approach, AND recognizes the changing role of dogs in our families today. I feel so much better about using the methods in this book because they make scientific sense, they’re positive and non-physical, and they focus on what’s important to our family – a well behaved, well mannered, and happy dog. The fact that the methods in the book follow principals from the American Humane Society and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is important to me. It’s also important to learn that these groups are critical of many of the traditional methods currently promoted in the popular press. The “lessons” in the book are an easy and often humorous read, and hit all the important things – from house training to handling bad manners (chewing, barking, stealing stuff, …) to serious things like agression and separation anxiety. Each item describes the behavior, why the dogs act this way, and then one or more levels of training to remedy the situation. Our family has already worked through several of these, including potty training for an almost adult dog, and have been very impressed with the results.
A few illustrations would have been helpful when describing hand signals, etc. but we followed the descriptions and still got a good result.
This book should be a “Must Read” for dog owners who want a polite and happy dog, and for dog trainers who want good, scientifically based results. Our first copy is already getting dog eared (no pun intended).

The Art of Raising a Puppy
The monks of New Skete, authors of the classic guide How to Be Your Dog’s Best Friend, now apply their highly successful training methods to the crucial first months of a puppy’s life. 50 photographs. The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New York monastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising dogs accentuates the essential human-canine bond, whereby owners must learn to understand a dog’s instincts, needs, and behavior. Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the key to successfully training him. They first published this philosophy in their 1978 classic guide How to Be Your Dog’s Best Friend. Now the monks concentrate on the first three months of a puppy’s life in The Art of Raising a Puppy. The book observes a litter of monastery puppies from birth to 12 weeks. Tender photographs and dialogue reflect these precious first few weeks of life. Even at this time, the human-canine link is vital; the monks stress the importance of gentle touch to help forge this connection. Basic puppy training techniques are explored and executed, all of which puppy owners should find easy to implement. Virtually all types of dog problems and dog training are examined in the book, always in compassionate and easily comprehensible language. The monks also look well beyond surface training techniques to analyze the roots of dogs’ problems and explain how training can help. Owners are taught how to gently assert dominance over their dog, which will make for a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship. Beautiful black-and-white photographs of monastery puppies will

The Art of Raising a Puppy Reviews

My husband agreed to a Dalmation for my wedding present in spite of all the misgivings he had about the breed. I purchased many books on dog training to ensure that our dog would be a welcome member of the household all its years. In each of them, I felt that there were holes in the philosophy, problem solving that might cause injury to my dog. I wanted a well thought out, cohesive plan that addressed daily training, submission, and problem behaviour within a philosophical framework. This was the book that became our bible. It was sane, safe for both the dog & us, and it showed immediate results. We got our puppy at 8 weeks, by 12 weeks she would sit, lie down and stay on command for up to 15 minutes whether we were in sight or not. The techniques in the book were so effective that we were able to implement them easily, with just a little time set aside every day. When we began puppy classes at 6 mos., we were immediately promoted to the advanced obedience class and worked with dogs that were showing successfully in obedience with two of the top trainers. They owned and showed the #1 and #2 obedience dogs in the country. Our dog is now 7 yrs old, because of how good she is, we can take her everywhere. She is welcome at our friends, neighborhood children come to play with her, there are even restaurants that insist she come in. Our dog owes the fact that her life is full and happy to this book. She has never had to be tied up, left behind or locked in a room. The quality of her life is so much better, because these monks shared their knowledge in this book. People always ask how we trained her, we go to your website, print out the page and give it to them, because we do not want them to think any training book will do. Ideally, people would read this book before choosing a puppy and then be completely prepared for the sustained effort needed in raising and training a dog.

The breeder we bought our german shepherd puppy from recommended this book to us. I am amazed at the work the Monks of New Skete are doing for the german shepherd breed. My hope is that all breeders would use the New Skete method with their litters. If this were done, then maybe so-called “dangerous breeds” would lose their bad rap. Surely there would be less dogs in animal shelters and pet shops.
I can not stress enough the importance of early human socialization, and the Monks of New Skete seem to agree. If you are planning on breeding a litter, I urge you to pick up this book an heed the authors advice.
This book also stresses humane training methods, and the importance of positive reinforcement. Using this method has helped with my dominant GSD pup. Constant scolding will get you nowhere. A quick pop on the lead when bad and copious amounts of praise when good makes training a happy occasion for both dog and master.
I would recommend the three tape training set “Raising Your Dog With The Monks of New Skete” along with this book. The tapes show the New Skete method from the puppy birth, to training the adult dog, and brings the information together nicely.
