Puppy Training Tips – 4 Puppy Do’s & Don’ts

Most people get or buy a puppy because they want to have someone to keep them company at home. Puppies are loving companions that give us unconditional love and attention. However, they can acquire bad habits that may be detrimental not only to you but to other people as well.  When old dogs acquire these habits, it’s much more difficult to undo or retrain them with more acceptable behaviors. Therefore, it is better if we can teach our new puppy while they are still young to avoid having to undo bad habits in the future.  Listed below are some puppy training tips that will help keep bad habits from taking root.

 Train Your Puppy That No Chewing or Biting On People Is Allowed

Chewing is inevitable because puppies grow their teeth and this could be too painful for them. Chewing relieves the pain which is why they put whatever they see inside their mouth—including your fingers, toes etc. Train your dog that no body parts are allowed inside his mouth because if he gets used to this, he is prone to biting, accidentally or otherwise, someone else in the future. This is especially scary when he gets older as his teeth and jaws will be stronger and bigger. Give him chew toys, dog bones or cold food that he can chew on when he’s teething. At the same time, say NO or yelp in pain everytime his nips or bites your fingers. It’s a good way of sending him a message that biting hurts you and he should stop doing it.

Train Your Puppy To Sit On Command

One of the most common puppy training tips is teaching your puppy how to sit. Teach him that he will only be petted when he sits and not jump on people.  When he learns this trick he will avoid jumping on people to get their attention. This habit could be very embarrassing especially if he does it to a stranger or to your boss who cames to visit your house. Together with sitting, you may also teach your dog how to lift their cute paw and shake your hand.

 Leash Train Your Puppy

Attaching your dog to a leash whenever you’re at home or walking in the park with him is a good way of training your dog to behave properly. It may be difficult at first but it is more beneficial than harmful in the long run.  You’re allowing your dog to learn and identify your body language quickly and act accordingly. At the same time, you are also giving yourself a chance to learn more about your dog. In the process, you develop a stronger and better relationship with your dog.

Crate Train Your Puppy

Included in these puppy training tips is how to crate train your puppy. I know that some people may not be comfortable with this idea. If you think that it is cruel, rest at ease. As a matter of fact, puppies adjust well and easily.  Putting your puppy in a crate puts your dog in a much safer place especially when you’re not around, travelling or visiting other locations.  At the same time, it is much easier to carry him during an emergency situation. Once he is familiar with this set-up it is much easier for you to put him there without stressing him out during circumstances or situations which would require your puppy to be put in a crate.
