How To Stop Puppy Biting

Puppy biting is your pet’s way of relieving himself of the pain that he is experiencing when he is in the teething process. It is also another way of relieving themselves of boredom when they have nothing to do. They bite when they are playing because they think it’s a part of fun.  Whatever the reason is, the main goal is to stop puppy biting fast because once they get used to it they will think it’s okay to do it all the time. It could lead to greater harm in the future.

Biting during play should be anticipated because this is how your puppy plays with his mother and littermates.  However, your puppy already has an idea that when he bites too hard he will get reprimanded because this is what happens when he does it to his mom. All you have to do is reinforce this idea when he bites you. But never shout nor spank him. Understand that this is way of interacting with you. Just let him know that you don’t like it. 

 Here are some tips on how to stop puppy biting effectively:

• The goal of this training is to make your puppy realize that biting is not acceptable.
• When he becomes very energetic, ready your leash and collar and put it around his neck. Make sure the collar is not too tight so it won’t choke him.
• When he has the leash on and he starts to bite you, take the leash and step on it. This will give you the chance to remove your hands away from the puppy. This process takes away his freedom to bite and as well as refusing him the attention that he seeks. Make sure that you sternly utter the word “No”. It will teach him a lesson that biting is not part of fun nor play.
• Keep your foot on the leash until he stops trying the attempt to bite you. When he does, release your foot and reach down to pet him or give him his treats. This will teach him that in order to enjoy his freedom he shouldn’t do things that displease you.  The treats will reinforce good behavior. 
• If your hand is already in his mouth, give a sharp “NO” or “Ouch” and slowly remove your hands. Never jerk it away because this could wound you.  If he bites you again, leave the room to let him know that you mean business and if he doesn’t behave he’ll lose his playmates.
• When you’re learning how to stop puppy biting, make sure that the rest of the household member does the same training that you are doing. Consistency is vital in this process. If you’re the only one doing it, he’ll think that it’s not ok to bite you, but it’s ok to bite others. This defeats the whole process.
• If he’s teething, don’t leave him inside a room that is full of your prized possession.  Put him inside a crate or in a separate room to prevent damage to your properties. You can give him chew toys or frozen food to relieve his pain.

If you are still unable to stop puppy biting you may have to visit your vet for some other puppy training tips. It is not acceptable to have a dog that bites as they may lash out with a child or other person causing harm.
